Doing double-sided Sozni work (Do-Rukha Sozni) on a shawl is one of the most intricate embroidery
techniques in the world. It requires precision, patience, and practice. Below is a step-by-step guide that
can help a skilled embroiderer or learner begin to understand and practice this rare technique:

            PROCEDURE
Process to do double-sided sozni work • Always keep the thread short (about 15–18 inches)
to prevent tangling and ensure control.
Step 1: Choose and prepare the fabric
                                                                  Fig 2
            • Select a tight-weave, smooth Pashmina or wool shawl.
            • Wash and iron the fabric to remove wrinkles or
               stiffness.
            • Mount the shawl on a wooden frame or embroidery
hoop to keep it taut. (Fig 1)

Step 4: Begin sozni stitch (fine satin stitch)

1 Insert the needle from the front side of the fabric
                                                                    without letting the tail hang.
2 Create a tiny, diagonal stitch on the outline of the motif.

Step 2: Design transfer 3 Bring the needle up again from the same hole or very
            • Lightly trace or hand-draw the motif on one side using close to it, and repeat.
charcoal or chalk pencil. 4 Ensure each stitch lies flat, with even spacing. (Fig 3)

            • Traditional motifs include: paisleys (badam), florals, Key rule for double-sided
               creepers, chinar leaves, etc.
Each stitch made on the front must appear identically
            • Make sure the design can mirror properly on both on the reverse side. There must be no visible thread
sides. (Fig 2) crossings or knots.
Step 3: Thread preparation Step 5: Build the design symmetrically
            • Use a single strand of silk or cotton thread. • Use the Sozni stitch to fill the motif area with tiny, flat
                                                                    stitches.
            • Thread the needle without tying a knot.
